Clinicians care for COVID-19 patients in a converted negative pressure room in the intensive care unit at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital on Aug. 10 in Lake Charles, La. The floor has been converted into an ICU strictly for COVID patients.

There are 29 more patients than there are ICU beds in the state as of Wednesday. The recent run, reminiscent of early in the pandemic, is occurring largely in states with the lowest vaccination rates.
